Argentina: clarify that the Government will cancel 15 thousand public contracts in March and not 70 thousand, as Milei said

Argentina’s presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni, assured this Wednesday that the Government will only cancel 15,000 public administration contracts that expire at the end of this month and rectified what the president said the day before. Javier MileiWho announced 70,000.

The universe of contracts analyzed is just over 70 thousand (…) But the finite number does not yet exist”, said the spokesperson in his usual daily press conference, who attributed the change to confusion and a “misinterpretation” of the president’s words in the International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA) Latam Forum, which ends this Wednesday in Buenos Aires.

There are 15 thousand (contracts) that will close on March 31st; the rest will be renewed for another six months and progress will continue in the analysis of each one”, Adorni said.

The spokesperson stressed that the contract audit work will be “very surgical”.

Adorni specified that the number of 15 thousand contracts that will be canceled at the end of March does not include those signed in Comprehensive Medical Assistance Program (PAMI) and in public companies in Argentina.

The rest (of the contracts) will continue to be reviewed and the objective is to reach what corresponds”, reaffirmed the spokesperson, who once again insisted that Executive Milei’s plans do not involve “doing any type of damage”, but rather being “as fair as possible in terms of public contracting”.

As part of his drastic ‘shock’ adjustment plan to recover the fiscal surplus, Milei, who assumed the Argentine presidency last December, canceled thousands of contracts for workers who had entered public administration in the last stretch of the Peronist government. Alberto Fernández (2019-2023).

Furthermore, it moved forward with the closure of ministries, secretariats, agencies and state-owned companies, which also generated a good number of layoffs.

According to the latest official data available, last January the State’s workforce was 333,853 workers, of which 224,072 were in the national public administration and 109,781 in state-owned companies and enterprises.
