LIVE: Tropical storm Pamela forms off the Mexican Pacific coast

Tropical storm Pamela formed this Sunday off the Pacific coast Mexican with the possibility of becoming a hurricane, and will cause heavy rains in several states, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

“At 4:00 pm, Central Mexico time, the tropical storm Pamela developed from Tropical Depression 16-E,” the Meteorological Service detailed in a bulletin.

Hours earlier, Mexican authorities predicted that Pamela It will become a category 1 hurricane on Monday and between Wednesday night and Thursday morning it will hit Mexican territory off the coast of Sinaloa with the possibility of intensifying to category 3.

At 4:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT) this Sunday, Pamela It was approximately 425 kilometers south-southwest of Manzanillo, Colima, and 855 km south-southeast of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (km / h), gusts of 95 km / h and moving toward the west-northwest at 24 km / h.

“During the next few hours, the tropical cyclone will cause very strong occasional rains in Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán and Nayarit, and strong in areas of Guerrero, as well as winds with gusts of 60 to 70 km / h and waves of 1 to 2 meters in the coasts of Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán ”, indicated the SMN.

Therefore, the SMN urged the general population in the areas of the states mentioned to be extremely cautious due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) and to comply with the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System.

So far this year there have been five hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, Elsa, Grace, Henri, Ida and Larry, of which Grace, Ida and Larry reached the highest category, 3 or more.

While in the Pacific Ocean the cyclones Andrés, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora and Olaf have formed.

Dolores made landfall in mid-June, killing three from electrical storms.

In mid-August, the rains generated by Grace, which made landfall in the Gulf of Mexico, caused the death of at least 11 people, 8 in the state of Veracruz and 3 in the central state of Puebla, in addition to severe flooding and damage.

The cyclone had impacted days before in the Yucatan peninsula, where it also left floods and power failures, although without fatalities.

Meanwhile, Nora, who made landfall on August 28, left a minor dead in the state of Jalisco and seven disappeared, six of them fishermen from the state of Guerrero.
