Tragedy in South Africa: 45 dead after bus falls into an abyss in Limpopo

Around 45 people died last Thursday after an accident involving a passenger bus that fell into an abyss near the city of Limpopoabout 380 kilometers north of Johannesburg (South Africa).

According to the newspaper Daily sunthe accident occurred after the bus that was transporting some parishioners who were heading for a pilgrimage of Easterfell from Mamatlakala Bridge about 50 meters deep, near a point known as Mokopane.

After the crash, the bus was consumed by flames and 45 of its 46 occupants died almost instantly. The only survivor, an 8-year-old girl, was immediately taken to the hospital.

Daily Sun reported that, according to police reports, the driver lost control and crashed into the bridge barriers, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall to the ground, where it caught fire.

Rescue operations continued until late in the evening on Thursday, March 28, when some bodies were burned beyond recognition, others were trapped in the rubble, and others were scattered across the site.

The bus was supposedly coming from Gaboronethe neighbor Botswanafor Moriahclose to the city of Polokwane.
