Brazil: a large fire partially consumes a building at a construction site in Recife

A large fire, from which there were initially no victims, partially consumed this Thursday a twenty-story building that was under construction in the city of Recifecapital of the Brazilian state of Pernambucano (Northeast), firefighters reported.

The fire broke out at around 8pm local time (2300 GMT) on Thursday and, although the structure appears to remain intact, it forced authorities to evacuate neighboring homes and buildings and block traffic on several surrounding streets as precautionary measures.

He Fire Department is acting on the spot and ensuring that people living in the area are safe“, said the governor of the state of Pernambucano, Raquel Lyrain a message published on their networks.

Although firefighters said there were initially no reports of casualties or injuries, images of the impressive fire were quickly shared around the world on social media and became a trend on some platforms.

Flames were visible on at least ten floors of the building, a residential property marketed as Botany Torre Flora for the Construtora Carrilhowhose delivery was scheduled for 2026 and located in the exclusive Torre Neighborhoodin the west zone of Recife.

He Pernambuco Fire Department reported that it sent four of its tanker trucks to the building, as well as a platform vehicle and another operations command vehicle, and that the firefighting tasks were supported by a helicopter.

Residents of the building reported that much of the damage occurred at a gas station adjacent to the building and that they fear that a giant crane installed on the tower’s roof will also collapse.

The local energy distributor reported that it had suspended the supply of electricity to the streets surrounding the building until the situation was under control, and that it had sent technicians to assist the firefighters.
