Government of Canada proposes that female contraceptives be free

The government of Canada wants to make prescription contraceptives completely free, Ottawa announced Saturday, detailing the first part of its national drug reimbursement plan.

The “most used” contraceptives, such as IUDs (hormonal or copper), hormonal implants, contraceptive pill and the morning-after pill will be covered by nine million Canadian women, declared Canadian Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, at a press conference at a pharmacy in Toronto.

“Women should be free to choose the contraceptives they need without cost being a barrier, so let’s make them free,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote in X.

In Canadathe birth control pill costs up to 300 Canadian dollars (220 US dollars) a year, while hormonal IUDs can cost up to 370 US dollars each, according to the government.

This announcement details the first part of the bill announced in late February that, once implemented, will represent the largest expansion of its public health system in decades.

Specifically, the plan will cover medications for diabeteslike insulin, for “more than 3.7 million Canadians.”

However, the cost and associated deadlines were not disclosed.

The federal government must now obtain the agreement of the provinces, responsible for health, to implement this program.
