Russia: Relatives of jailed dissident Orlov worry about his health

Russian human rights group Memorial expressed concern on Monday about the deteriorating health of dissident Oleg Orlov, jailed for condemning the offensive in Ukraine, accusing authorities of subjecting him to “inhumane treatment.” At the end of February, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in a general regime colony.

70-year-old Oleg Orlov is “losing his hearing,” the public organization Memorial, co-winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize and dissolved by Russian justice, where the dissident worked, reported on Telegram.

Despite the fact that Oleg Orlov turned to the colony administration for medical help, he “still cannot contact the prison doctor, as he is forced to leave his cell before lunch and not return until late at night” due to ongoing legal proceedings to appeal the verdict .

Risk of “irreversible consequences”

According to Memorial, these trips to court caused the dissident to become ill, but justice “demands” that he continue to go there from prison. “This inhumane treatment of 70-year-old Orlov led to a deterioration in his health. His health is at risk of irreversible consequences,” the NGO warned.

According to his organization, the opponent is also deprived of the right to a defense, unable to have confidential conversations with his lawyer or exchange documents with him that will not be read by court staff.
