Haiti’s National Palace is under attack by armed men

The National Palace of Haiti is being attacked this Monday by armed men and several employees are trapped, leaving at least five police officers injured, one of them seriously.

At this moment, as EFE was able to see, intense shootings continue in the area and fierce clashes between criminals and the Police in the main public square of Port Prince, Field of Marsvery close to National Palacein the heart of the Haitian capital.

Members of armed gangs, belonging to the coalition’Viva Set‘(‘Live together‘), led by the powerful Jimmy Cherizierindeed ‘Barbecue‘, managed to set fire to an armored vehicle from the National Police close to the National Palace.

Armed gangs, who control around 90% of Port-au-Prince, recently promised to take control of the Palace.

In March, gangs already tried to invade the building, but without success.

This situation comes after a few days of less violence from gangs, a tense calm broken this local morning when clashes and shootings between gangs and the Police returned with more force to the streets of the capital.

Today Champs de Mars has already been the scene of shootings, forcing people to run in all directions to escape the gunfire, in addition to paralyzing activities in the region.

Also in the sector of Pétion-VilleIn the hills of Port-au-Prince, four bodies were found, apparently riddled with gunshots.

This is a new increase in tension, within the escalation of violence that is being experienced Haiti since the end of February with gang attacks on institutions, companies, private properties and prisons, with the consequent escape of around 3,600 prisoners, many of them members and leaders of armed groups.

Meanwhile, Haiti awaits the implementation of the Presidential Transition Council which must elect a prime minister and pave the way for presidential elections.

When this institution is in operation, the Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henriquewho is outside the country, will leave power, as he himself announced in the early hours of March 12th.
