The 2024 Olympics in Paris are aimed at Russia: the Kremlin condemns Macron’s accusations

This Friday, the Kremlin condemned the “unfounded” accusations of French President Emmanuel Macron, who assured that Russia is pursuing the goal of organizing the Olympic Games by spreading information suggesting that Paris will not be ready. “These are completely unfounded accusations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the press, assuring that they were “never supported by evidence.” “This behavior is completely unacceptable,” he continued.

The republic’s president on Thursday accused Moscow of “feeding every day the fact that we cannot do this or that, so it would be a risk” regarding the organization of the Olympic Games in France scheduled for this summer. Disinformation campaigns that are familiar to Russia, no matter what the topic, are based on a real consideration of the threat from the French authorities.

Very tense relationship

Relations between Paris and Moscow have remained very tense for several weeks amid debate over the possible dispatch of French troops to Ukraine. On Wednesday, Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu, at Macron’s request, according to Le Parisien, initiated a telephone exchange with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu for the first time since October 2022.

The call sparked new tensions, with Emmanuel Macron subsequently condemning the “outlandish and threatening comments” of Russia, which expressed “hope” that French intelligence services were not involved in the attack on the Crocus, a concert hall near the Russian capital, two weeks ago. . The massacre, which left 144 people dead and 551 injured, was claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State. The FSB arrested eleven people, four of whom were directly involved in the terrorist attack, which Moscow believes was organized by its Ukrainian enemy.

Dmitry Peskov also considered on Friday “unfounded” accusations by Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupka, who told the Financial Times that Russia had launched “thousands” of cyberattack attempts aimed at disrupting European railway networks and destabilizing the European Union.
