Ex-Vice President Glas leaves hospital and returns to Ecuador’s maximum security prison

The former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas, arrested last Friday after a police raid at the Embassy of Mexicoin Quitowas arrested again after recovering in hospital from decompensation that a police report attributed to a possible drug overdose and which prison authorities linked to his refusal to eat food.

The National Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), the state penitentiary agency, indicated without further details that “I just entered the Liberty Center Deprivation La Roca, the country’s maximum security prison.

glass remained under medical observation during the last hours at the Naval Hospital in the city of Guayaquil.

He SNAI pointed out that glass introduced “stable and normal health parameters”so that he could receive the corresponding medical discharge.

The prison body had advanced this this Tuesday, in “strict compliance with security protocols”, Glas will return to La Roca, where he was detained after his arrest in Mexican Embassy.

In that prison – he pointed SNAI– “the protection of the physical integrity” of glass.

Andrés VillegasGlas’ lawyer, considered the statement of the SNAI and complained about the lack of official information about the real situation of Glas’ health problem that occurred on Monday.

This is because a police report – to which the defense of glass– mentions a supposed drug poisoningwhile the SNAI refers to a decompensation due to lack of food intake.

Villegas told EFE that he hopes to receive official information about the health situation of glasswho was minister and vice-president during the presidential term of Rafael Corrêa (2007-2017), with whom he has been friends since his youth. He was also vice president of Lenin Moreno (2017-2021) in the first months of his term.

Glas, who had entered the Embassy of Mexico in Quito Last December, he requested asylum from the Mexican State, which granted him last Friday, and hours later the president of the Ecuador, Daniel Noboaordered the police assault on the diplomatic headquarters to arrest him, which caused the breakdown of relations on the part of the Mexico.

The attack on the embassy received international condemnation, while Ecuador justifies its action by combating corruption, since glass is prosecuted for alleged embezzlement of funds in a case relating to the reconstruction of the province of Manabi after the 2016 earthquake, and has not yet served an eight-year sentence in two other cases, for which he has already spent almost five years in prison between 2017 and 2022.
