President of Ukraine signs 10-year security guarantee agreement with Latvia

The president of UkraineVolodymyr Zelensky signed this Thursday with his Latvian counterpart, Edgar Rinkevics, a ten-year security guarantee agreement, similar to what he has already signed with other countries such as Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The president, who signed the agreement during his official trip to Lithuania, where he is participating together with Rinkevics and other Baltic and Polish leaders in an international conference, indicated that Latvia will provide Ukraine with military aid equivalent to 0.25% of gross domestic product. (GDP) of the nation by 2026.

Riga will also contribute five million euros per year to the country’s reconstruction until 2026, the Latvian government said in a statement.

Latvia’s non-military support refers to cooperation in the development and reconstruction of the northern region of Chernigov.

Furthermore, Latvia is committed to supporting Ukraine for ten years in cyber defense, energy security, demining and drones, as well as supporting Kiev on its path to membership of the European Union (EU) and NATO.

One of the key elements of the agreement is the establishment of a consultation mechanism in case Russia attacks again Ukraine in the future, said Riga.

The Ukrainian President arrived in Lithuania this Thursday to participate in the three seas summit and economic forum and hold talks with the heads of state present at the event, including the Lithuanian and Polish leaders, Gitanas Nauseda and Andrzej Duda, respectively.

“The main thing now is to do everything possible to strengthen our air defense, meet the urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forcesas well as consolidating international support so that we can overcome Russian terror”, he highlighted when announcing his trip to Vilnius.

Zelensky stressed that “Russian evil is a threat not only to Ukraine, but also to all peoples bordering Russia and to all those who value international law.”

Ukraine has already signed several bilateral security guarantee agreements with major powers and smaller countries, and is preparing a similar one with Spain, as recently indicated after speaking by telephone with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.
