Russia: justice has prosecuted more than 2,500 soldiers since 2022, the majority for desertion

The Justice Russian prosecuted during the more than two years of war with Ukraine to more than 2,500 members of the country’s Armed Forces, in most cases due to desertion, according to the newspaper ‘Novaya Gazeta Europa’.

“Since the beginning of the large-scale war in UkraineRussian courts have handed down more than 2,500 sentences against its fighters and former fighters,” the media notes.

Most of them were accused of “crimes against military service”, which resulted in them voluntarily abandoning their military unit.

However, at least 1,130 participants in the war were charged with civil crimes, “from traffic violations to homicide.”

According to the newspaper, “at least 192 military personnel” were involved in the violent crimes.

According to journalists, in about half of the cases, participation in the war served as a mitigating circumstance in the proceedings brought against the military.

At the same time, the newspaper highlights that uniformed police officers are judged more harshly than civilians when it comes to explosives trafficking cases.
