The members of the United Nations Security Council failed to reach agreement on Thursday on the Palestinians’ request for full membership of the United Nationsannounced the current president of the Council, suggesting a possible imminent vote.
“There was no consensus”on the admission of a Palestinian state, declared Vanessa Frazierambassador of maltwho will preside over the Council in April.

Last week, highlighting the Israeli offensive on Linkthe Palestinians relaunched their application for membership UN 2011. The Council launched its formal review process within a committee ad hoc of the Council, composed of the same Member States.
At the end of a second closed-door meeting, Frazier said that “two thirds” of Council members are in favor of full Palestinian membership, without mentioning them.
This committee can only make decisions by consensus.
However, this does not put an end to the Palestinian approach. Following the commission’s report, any member state of the Council may vote on a resolution on accession.
According to diplomatic sources, the vote could take place on April 18, at the initiative of the Algeriawhich represents Arab countries in the Council.

Although the Maltese ambassador suggested that such a resolution would require nine of the 15 votes needed, observers predict a veto from U.S.
As in 2011, Americans believe that the UN is not the right place to recognize a Palestinian statewhich in his opinion should be the result of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
They also point to a US law that would cut funding to the UN if the security advice accepts a Palestinian state without this bilateral agreement.
