Iranian threats: can international pressure stop Tehran from attacking Israel?

The tension continues to rise. More than ten days after the April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, which killed seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the threat of retaliation from Tehran is becoming increasingly urgent. Faced with this situation, France even “recommends” its citizens to “refrain” from traveling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel or the Palestinian territories, when the American Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on this Thursday his Chinese, Turkish and Saudi counterparts to put pressure on Iran against any attack on Israel.

While Israel says it expects an attack on the north or south of its territory between Saturday and Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal, a source close to Iranian leaders says no decision has yet been made. Therefore, it is in this uncertainty that mediation attempts to take place. “Iranians are not ideological fanatics who turn a blind eye. Everything is calculated for them,” recalls Adel Bakawan, a Middle East specialist and director of the French Center for Iraq Studies. In other words, Tehran should not attack Israel to such an extent that it later does it a disservice.
