Germany: authorities arrest two people accused of spying for Russia

German authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of two alleged spies Russianssuspected of having wanted to commit acts of sabotage, including against the US army, to support “Putin’s criminal regime” in its war against Ukraine.

The two men, identified only as Dieter S. and Alexander J. and who have German nationality, were detained in the city of Bayreuth, southeast of Germanyon Wednesday, prosecutors said in a statement.

The main accused, Dieter S., allegedly explored possible targets to commit attacks, “including US military installations” stationed in Germany.

According to prosecutors, Dieter S. had been exchanging information with a person linked to the Russian intelligence services since October 2023, evoking possible acts of sabotage.

“The actions were intended, in particular, to undermine the military support provided since Germany for Ukraine against Russian aggression,” prosecutors said.

According to the weekly Der Spiegel, the large American Bavarian base of Grafenwohr, where Ukrainian soldiers are trained in the use of Abrams battle tanks, was in their sights.

“No evidence was presented that demonstrated the plans of the detainees or their possible connection with representatives of structures Russian“, reacted the Russian embassy in Berlin on X.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had earlier summoned the Russian ambassador to Berlin on Thursday.

For her part, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser praised the work of the security services, which “prevented possible explosive attacks that would attack and undermine our military aid to Ukraine”.

“This is a particularly serious case of alleged activity by agents of the criminal regime (Russian President Vladimir) Putin”, he reported on his X account.
