Mexico: A missing mayoral candidate in Oaxaca is found dead

Mexican authorities reported this Friday the lifeless discovery of Alberto Antonio García, candidate of the ruling party for municipal presidency of San José Independencia, southern state of Oaxacawhere he had been missing since Thursday.

His wife and current mayor of that municipality, Agar Cancino Gómez, appeared alive, although with signs of violence, according to the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office.

Both politicians, from the ruler National Regeneration Movement (Morena)they were reported as ‘not located’ before the Deputy Prosecutor’s Office of the Papaloapan Basin region, where they disappeared while traveling by car along the Loma Bonita-Tuxtepec highway.

For now, a police operation continues, involving members of the Army, the Oaxaca State Police and agents from the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office, in an area close to the city of Isla del Viejo Soyaltepec, 40 kilometers from San José Independencia.

García was Morena’s candidate to run for municipal president of San José Independencia and replace his wife in the position.

The events occur amid political violence, with 15 candidates murdered so far in the process for the June 2 elections, according to official data released by the Government on Tuesday, although civil organizations estimate that the number would be closer to 30.

Almost 8 in 10 victims are candidates for municipal positions, a study by the organizations Data Cívica and México Evalúa revealed this Tuesday.
