London cancels New Year’s fireworks again due to coronavirus pandemic

The traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks in London, which generally take place on the banks of the Thames, were canceled for the second year in a row due to the pandemic of coronavirus, announced Tuesday the mayor of the British capital.

“Due to the uncertainty caused by the covid-19 pandemic, our famous New Years show will not take place this year on the banks of the Thames,” said a spokesman for the mayor, Sadiq Khan.

The city is studying several “interesting options” to replace the castle of fireworks, he added, promising that “London will receive the new year in a spectacular way.”

Before the pandemic, London organized impressive fireworks castles every year for which many people gathered near the London Eye, the large Ferris wheel on the banks of the river, on the south bank of the Thames.

Last year the event was canceled by the pandemic, and replaced by improvised fireworks and a light show.

According to The Sun newspaper, London should celebrate the new year with an hour-long midnight show in central Trafalgar Square.
