Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday after a phone call with his US counterpart Joe Biden that their two countries had “started working on a bilateral security agreement.”

Long-term promises

In recent months, Ukraine has signed “security agreements” with several European countries, including France, Britain and Finland.

These agreements essentially represent promises from these countries to continue to provide long-term military and financial support to Ukraine to counter Russian invasion.

The US House of Representatives on Saturday approved $61 billion in new aid to Ukraine that had been blocked for months due to political infighting in Washington.

Joe Biden on Monday promised Volodymyr Zelensky to send the aid “quickly” once the US Congress finally passes it to respond to Ukraine’s “urgent needs.”

“I am grateful to the president, his team, and all members of the US Congress,” Vladimir Zelensky repeated in his address, after he had previously thanked Joe Biden over the phone for his “unwavering support” for Ukraine.
