Brazil: judge opens investigation against Bolsonaro for staying at the Hungarian embassy

A judge of Federal Court of Justice (STF) Brazil decided to open an investigation into the former president’s stay JairBolsonaro at the embassy of Hungary in Brasiliafinding no evidence that he intended to seek asylum to escape justice.

Bolsonaro (2019-2022) is being investigated as a suspect of planning a coup d’état to prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will assume the presidency in January 2023.

As part of this investigation, which began on February 8, Bolsonaro was banned from leaving the country and the police removed his passport.

The police launched the Operation Tempus Veritatis (the moment of truth, in Latin), against Bolsonaro and several of his close allies, including former ministers, for the alleged coup plot.

Bolsonaro denies this and says he is the victim of a “persecution”, an argument that he reiterated on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, where he led a demonstration in defense of “freedom of expression”.
