The IACHR accuses Venezuela of violating human rights to “discourage political participation”

O Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) this Thursday accused the State of Venezuela to violatesystematically” O DD. HH. for, among other reasons he pointed out, “discourage political participation”in the country, which will hold presidential elections on July 28.

The State has systematically violated human rights, including freedom of expression, to facilitate the concentration of power in the hands of Executive powerdiscourage political participation and undermine the independence of institutions“, as indicated in the chapter referring to Venezuela of the annual report of IACHRcorresponding to 2023.

In the commission’s opinion, the sanctions of disqualification from holding public office, among which it cited the one imposed on the former deputy Maria Corina Machado -winner of the anti-Chavista primaries in October- were applied.”disproportionately against members of the opposition”, which “violates inter-American standards regarding political rights”.

In the document, the autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS) assured that “The institutional deterioration and lack of independence of the Judiciary allowed the country to establish a climate of impunity for serious violations of human rights.”.

In this sense, he assured that “neither does he public ministrynot even Ombudsman neither does he Judicial power acted with due diligence to investigate, prosecute and punish serious violations“, which – he stated – is due to “lack of independence of these institutions in relation to the Government”.

Therefore, the commission urged the Maduro government to “restore the constitutional order, guaranteeing independence and the balance of powers, political participation without any type of repression or discrimination of the entire population and effective citizen control over the actions of the different powers of the State”.

Furthermore, he asked “annul administrative measures that restrict political rights”.

For these and other recommendations, he offered to collaborate with the Venezuelan State and reaffirmed his willingness to visit the Caribbean country.

The IACHR is part of the Inter-American Human Rights Systemwhere the Venezuelan Government came from.

In March, the commission called on the international community to put pressure on Caracas to hold fair and competitive presidential elections, in which the current head of state, Nicolás Madurowill seek his second re-election.
