VIDEO. Revelations about the death of Nika Shakarami, a 16-year-old Iranian girl killed in 2022

She was a 16-year-old girl who participated in the first demonstrations against the Iranian regime and the obligation to wear the veil after the death of Mahsa Amini. On September 20, she was seen on video burning her hijab surrounded by several protesters. The next day she disappeared, and only nine days later her mother found her in the morgue. She officially committed suicide. But the BBC managed to obtain official documents confirming a completely different version.

In fact, the young woman was arrested by security forces from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Once in the van, one of them raped her. While handcuffed, she nevertheless tried to defend herself, but was then hit with a baton. The three men present beat her to death and then dump her body on the streets of Tehran.

Nika Shakarami is one of more than 550 people killed in Iran as part of the Women, Life, Freedom uprising, according to a United Nations report published in late March. Some demonstrators were executed, others were sentenced to death, such as Iranian rapper Toumaj Salehi. Since mid-April, the repression has intensified: women have been arrested for not wearing the burqa.
