Australia: Police kill “radicalized” teenager after knife attack

The Police of Australia killed a 16-year-old teenager, described as “radicalized” and who acted “alone”, after attacking police officers carrying a knife and after attacking and chasing several people, leaving at least one injured.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 11:30 pm local time (3:30 pm GMT) in the city of Perth, capital of the state of Western Australia.

According to the report of the Policethe young man, of Caucasian ethnicity and carrying a kitchen knife measuring approximately 30 centimeters, stabbed a person in the back, who is admitted to a hospital with a stable prognosis, and pursued him with the intention of attacking other pedestrians on a main street in the south of the city .

Upon arriving at the scene, several officers asked the young man to drop the weapon, to which the teenager responded by attacking the police officers, who shot the attacker with two shots with electric shocks and one with live ammunition.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The police told the media that the young man, who suffered from mental problems, was known to the authorities and they suspect that he was “radicalized” via the Internet, reports the public channel ABC.

Authorities assured that he “acted alone” while opening an investigation into what happened.

“Members of the Muslim community of Western Australia, who were concerned about his behavior, contacted the Police before the incident and thanked them for their help. Our Police responded in a matter of minutes”, noted the head of the regional government, Roger Cook, on Facebook.

In turn, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, thanked the Police for their actions during a press conference and assured that “violent extremism has no place in Australia”.

Last night’s incident occurred after a young man’s knife attack on a bishop on April 15 in an Assyrian church in Sydney, which ended with the religious injured and the suspect detained in an event classified by the Police as “terrorist”.

This attack in Sydney was followed by a counter-terrorism operation in which seven teenagers were arrested.

On April 13th it was also recorded a knife attack in a Sydney shopping center, which left seven dead, including the perpetrator – who suffered from schizophrenia – killed by authorities, who are investigating whether it was an attack directed against women.
