Ukrainian Parliament approves project so that detainees can be recruited into the army

He Ukrainian parliament adopted on Wednesday a bill that will allow the army to recruit certain categories of prisoners in exchange for an amnesty, as Kiev tries to mobilize more soldiers against Russia.

“Parliament voted +yes+“, indicated on Facebook the deputy Olena Shulyakof the president’s party Volodimir Zelenskystating that the text was approved by 279 votes in favor in the second reading.

“The bill opens up the possibility of enlisting in the Defense Forces to certain categories of prisoners who have expressed a desire to defend their country” he declared.

The measure will only affect voluntary detainees and will not apply to convictions for serious crimes, such as homicide, sexual violence or attacks on national security.

Only prisoners who have less than three years remaining on their sentences may be mobilized.

The speaker of the Ukrainian parliament and Zelensky must sign the law before it comes into force.

Russia has recruited tens of thousands of prisoners to serve at the front since it launched its invasion in February 2022, initially offering presidential pardons.

After more than two years of resistance, Ukraine faces a shortage of soldiers and weapons in the face of a larger Russian army.
