The nuclear threat is once again emerging in this conflict. Russia’s strategic nuclear forces are “always” ready for battle, Vladimir Putin said this Thursday during his speech on Red Square at the May 9 military parade amid tensions over the conflict in Ukraine.
“Russia will do everything to avoid global confrontation. But at the same time, we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic (nuclear) forces are always on combat readiness,” the Russian President said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered the upcoming nuclear exercise in response to comments from Western leaders, including his counterpart Emmanuel Macron, about the possible sending of NATO soldiers to Ukraine, according to the Kremlin. A statement that appears to be a reminder, as international risk consultant Stéphane Audrand comments, of “how far Russian doctrine can go in nuclear matters” that does not warrant “alarm” at the moment.
