CGT general strike against Milei in Argentina LIVE, last hour of the second strike for adjustment

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, faces this Thursday the second general strike against the “brutal adjustment” of his government, which paralyzes land, sea and air transport services; as well as educational and financial institutions and businesses across the country. Called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the 24-hour strike does not foresee mobilization on the streets and has the support of workers in the State, health, tourism, trams and the Buenos Aires metro, among others. In its appeal, the CGT accuses Milei’s ultra-liberal government of lacking “social dialogue” and implementing “a brutal adjustment that is especially suffered by low-income sectors, the salaried middle classes, retirees and pensioners”.

The government “only links up with representatives of friendly interests (and) attacks and rejects workers and their organizations”, accused the trade union central in a statement.

The strike follows the 12-hour general strike on January 24 and after almost daily demonstrations against the government’s readjustments.

The biggest protest occurred on April 24, when Hundreds of thousands of people marched across the country in defense of public universitieswhich sees its continuity threatened by lack of budget.

The university march was a wake-up call for Mileisince “public opinion was willing to mobilize on certain issues that it considers collective goods and that are above political polarization,” political scientist Gabriel Vommaro told AFP.

Doors stopped

The presidency Argentina It was estimated that the strike will affect 6.6 million people.

Almost 400 flights were canceled and 70,000 passengers were injured.according to the Latin American Air Transport Association.

Meanwhile, port workers’ unions on the outskirts of Rosário (Santa Fé, north), where the country exports 80% of its agro-industrial production, anticipated that “Everything will stop.”

“It will be an active and peaceful strike and the leaders will visit the 17 companies we have in the area to discuss with our colleagues”, Martín Morales, union leader in the city of San Lorenzo, which has ports north of Rosario, told AFP.

The strike takes place in the middle of the “thick harvest”, the period of greatest production for this important global food exporter.

“We have no problems with companies, “There is a problem that we cannot look away from and it is of a national nature.”the leader continued.

“Fundamentalists of delay”

Despite a slight decline in April, Several recent surveys place Milei’s positive image at between 45% and 50%. “Their support remains pretty solid,” Vommaro said.

This is remarkable stability for a government that, in just five months, inflicted what Milei describes this as “the biggest adjustment in the history of humanity”.

“The limit of adjustment is the resistance capacity of the adjustment”said Carlos Heller, a former banker and opposition congressman critical of the government.

The presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorniconsidered on Wednesday that unemployment responds to political interests. “They stop those who want to continue doing Argentina a path of servitude, the fundamentalists of backwardness that they carry on the backs of the workers”, he accused.
