Mexico: activists find 21 bodies in clandestine grave in the Mexican state of Guanajuato

On May 9, the day before Mother’s Day in Mexico, a woman searching for her son notified the State Search Commission that she had received a tip about a location where there were possibly human remains.

It is a vacant lot located in the Los Álamos neighborhood (neighborhood), 4 kilometers from the Municipal Presidency of Abasolo.

Upon arriving at the site, authorities and mothers who searched found skeletal remains of one person and, when they expanded the search a little further, they located signs of two others. bodies.

The next day, when they returned to continue work, employees from the State Attorney General’s Office prevented access because it was a crime scene, said Karla Martínez.

“Until the place is completely clean, that’s when we hand it over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, because that’s exactly what happens, they continue to hide and deny us the information, and this is something that the (State Search) Commission has now gone unnoticed. ,” he said. .

He explained that, after several efforts, they managed to enter the place and resume the search work, find remains of 15 other people.

“We need to start reviewing how the Public Prosecutor’s Office closes a search because this has happened again,” he said.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office staff are not prepared to carry out the searches, in fact they don’t even carry the tools sometimes to carry out the inspection, it was my turn to lend them my tools so they can carry them out,” he added.

Based on data from the National Search Commission, in the state of Guanajuato, the state with the most homicides in Mexico since 2018, there are at least 2,634 missing people, of whom 38 were reported in the municipality of Abasolo.

At country level, there are records of 103,256 people whose whereabouts are unknown and it is believed, based on any evidence, that their absence is related to the commission of a crime. crime.
