Gaza War: Israel ‘intends to resume’ hostage talks this week

A glimmer of hope for the families of the detainees? An Israeli official told AFP on Saturday that Israel “intends” to resume negotiations this week to secure the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

“There is an intention to resume discussions this week” and “there is an agreement” on the issue, the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity because the week in Israel begins on Sunday.

The official did not provide details of the agreement, but Israeli media reported that Mossad (Israeli intelligence) chief David Barney reached an agreement with CIA Director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdelrahman. Al-Thani during a meeting in Paris regarding a new framework for negotiations.

In early May, indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas through Qatar, Egypt and the United States failed to produce a truce agreement related to the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron received the Prime Minister of Qatar and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.

The war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7 after an attack on Israeli territory by Hamas militants infiltrating from the Gaza Strip killed more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse count based on official Israeli data.

That day, 252 people were also taken hostage into Palestinian territory. According to the army, after the November truce, which, in particular, allowed the release of about a hundred of them, 121 hostages are still being held in the Gaza Strip, of whom 37 are dead.

In response, the Israeli army launched a devastating offensive into Palestinian territory that has killed at least 35,903 people, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry of Hamas, a movement considered terrorist by Israel, the United States and the European Union. .
