War in Ukraine: Russian strike on a busy Kharkov hypermarket leaves two dead and several injured

At least two people were killed and 24 injured on Saturday in a Russian strike on a construction supplies hypermarket in Ukraine’s second city, Kharkov, where “more than 200 people” may have been present at the time of the strike.

“Russia dealt another brutal blow to our city of Kharkov – a construction hypermarket – on Saturday, in the middle of the day,” Vladimir Zelensky condemned the president in Telegram and on X.

What is the result?

According to the regional governor Oleg Sinegubov, at least two people were killed and 24 were injured as a result of the attack, carried out using two guided bombs. “Four people are missing,” Mayor Igor Terekhov added on Telegram.

“At the moment we know that there could be more than 200 people inside the hypermarket. All services are already in place to help save people and put out the fire,” said Vladimir Zelensky.

Impressive images

Pictures published on Ukrainian social networks show a building with a huge plume of black smoke belching out. According to authorities, between 10,000 and 15,000 m2 are burning.

Vladimir Zelensky once again called on Ukraine’s Western allies to provide his country with more air defense systems. “If Ukraine had enough air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, such Russian strikes would be impossible,” the president said. “Every day we appeal to the world: give us air defense, save people. »

The city of Kharkov, which had a pre-war population of 1.5 million and is located near the Russian border in northeastern Ukraine, has been regularly attacked by Moscow’s forces, which also launched a ground offensive in the region on May 10. About fifteen Russian missiles struck the city of Kharkov on Thursday, killing seven civilians and destroying a printing press, local authorities said.

This offensive allowed them to capture several settlements and force Kyiv to send reinforcements to this area. Ukraine, however, assured on Friday that the attack had “stopped.”
