According to Garland, El Nini was “one of the main assassins or assassins of the Sinaloa cartel and responsible for the murder, torture and kidnapping of rivals and witnesses who threatened the criminal enterprise of drug trafficking.”

Pérez Salas is close to the children of drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is serving a life sentence in the United States.

El Nini was arrested in November 2023 in Culiacán, northwest of Mexico, and according to North American justice he also “participated in the production and sale of fentanyl for the Sinaloa cartel, including in the United States”.

In a statement thanking his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, US President Joe Biden said Perez Salas played a “prominent” role in the Sinaloa cartel, which he described as “one of the companies in the deadliest drug trade.” drugs”. in the world.”

“Our governments will continue to work together to attack the fentanyl and synthetic drug epidemic that is killing so many people in our countries and around the world,” Biden added.

Synthetic fentanyl is the cause of tens of thousands of deaths a year in the United States, which they say is mainly manufactured in pharmaceutical laboratories in Mexico with substances sourced from China.
