Tensions with Estonia, Lithuania and Finland: why Russia is increasing pressure in the Baltic Sea

Hostile winds are blowing in Moscow’s Baltic waters. Estonia on Thursday accused Russia of removing buoys installed on the Narva River dividing the two countries. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas spoke of a “border incident” in the context of rising tensions, while the Baltic states and other states in the region believe they are under threat from Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

The incident follows another border dispute in the region involving Russia. Neighboring Baltic country Lithuania said Wednesday it had summoned a Russian diplomatic adviser over plans to unilaterally expand Russia’s maritime border into Lithuanian and Finnish waters, warning it could be a hybrid military tactic.
