Colombia: everything you need to know about the first menstrual allowance

Comfama compensation fund launched the first menstrual allowance in Colombia, an initiative that was born together with a pedagogical program of conversations and meetings that seek that “all girls, teenagers, women and menstruating people live their lives with dignity menstrual cycle”.

Specifically, the program and menstrual allowanceconstitutes a tool to activate dialogues, take care of the body, overcome menstrual poverty and contribute culturally to the care of the environment and the promotion of physical, mental and social health of girls, adolescents, women and menstruating people”.

Comfana explains that the menstrual allowance “It not only seeks that elements such as the menstrual cup, cloth towels and absorbent pants become affordable for everyone, but also provides pedagogical coverage in schools, conversation settings and community media in the Aburrá Valley and the subregions from Antioquia de Urabá, East, Southwest, West, North, Magdalena Medio, Bajo Cauca and Northeast”.

It should be noted that in Colombia, according to data reported by the compensation fund, one in two girls from vulnerable populations do not have access to hygienic alternatives and that more than 30% of adolescents feel discomfort and shame when talking about menstruation.

With this initiative, the compensation fund plans to accompany 2,700 girls, adolescents and menstruating people during the first phase, between the ages of 12 and 18, to resignify their cyclicality.

Who does it apply to?

Initially, it will be awarded to girls and adolescents between 12 and 18 years old according to the salary categories of the affiliates.

Comfana reported that it will be delivered as a bonus from November 1, 2021 to April 14, 2022, and will be redeemed up to a month after its generation.

How much is the subsidy?

According to the affiliation category and the menstrual management product, Comfama will subsidize the following value in the products:

  • Menstrual cup: for TA and TB members, subsidy up to 76 %.
  • Absorbent pants: for TA and TB members, subsidy up to 79 %.
  • Reusable towels: for TA and TB members, subsidy up to 79 %.

For TC affiliates, the benefit will be the additional discount granted by the ally, which goes from 10% to 35% on menstrual management items.

Can the money be used for another purpose?

Noel bono applies only to purchase of menstrual management products (menstrual cups, absorbent pants and reusable towels in the different authorized partners: Vera Cup, Somos Martina, WAM, Nosotras and Bloom).

The voucher applies to the purchase of menstrual hygiene products that contribute to sustainability and the environment.

How do you claim?

The subsidy is awarded through The Ticket Office and is redeemed through the communication channel of the selected ally. That is, the affiliate must enter the La Tiquetera portal to generate his bonus, after validating the affiliation.

It is available for workers and their beneficiaries. Of course, Comfana clarified that only one bonus will be delivered per affiliated person.

How often will it be awarded?

Members who generate a menstrual cup purchase voucher must wait seven years to access the subsidy again, this because the useful life of the product is estimated at 10 years.

Meanwhile, members who generate a voucher for the purchase of absorbent pants or reusable towels must wait three months to access the subsidy again.
