VIDEO. Young Ukrainian pilots trained on Alpha Jet at a secret base in southwest France

After months of basic fighter pilot training in England, it was time to take the wheel and take off. At the moment, there is no talk of taking control of the F-16 fighters promised to Ukraine, but young Ukrainian recruits are training on model aircraft used by the French Alpha Jet patrol. There are about forty of them in France.

The program for students who represent the hope of their country includes 80 hours of flight and 50 hours of simulator training to learn flight techniques, target identification and weapons handling. France has committed to training 26 Ukrainians to fly the F-16 over two years, while it trains about 30 French pilots each year.

On this day, the task is to fly at low altitude, at a speed of 700 km/h. “The lower we fly, the later we are discovered. Flying at such an altitude allows you to feel the speed,” explains the French lieutenant colonel.

Confronted with Russian military progress: Ukrainian head of state Vladimir Zelensky said he needed 120 to 130 F-16s to end Moscow’s air dominance.
