‘She is recovering slowly’: Princess Anne, sister of King Charles III, still in hospital

Princess Anne, sister of King Charles III, is recovering “slowly,” her husband Tim Lawrence said Wednesday after visiting her in hospital, where she is being monitored after a head blow believed to have been caused by a horse.

Announcing his hospitalization, the third this year for a member of the royal family, Buckingham Palace said on Monday that the incident occurred the previous day at his country residence in Gatcombe Park, west London. The 73-year-old princess, who is very popular in England, was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, about 50km away and known for its trauma centre.

“The princess is recovering well,” a palace spokesman added. “She is slowly recovering,” Tim Lawrence, who visits her every day, said Wednesday. “She will come out when she is ready,” he added, declining to speculate.

According to British media, the shock caused memory problems and the princess could not remember exactly what happened as she walked around her domain.

His “minor” head injuries were consistent with being hit by a horse, head or legs, his doctors said.

The most active of the royal family

Princess Anne, who holds the title Princess Royal, is the most active member of the royal family, hosting hundreds of engagements each year. Last year she carried more children than King Charles, and the sovereign’s cancer, like Princess Kate’s, has further increased her burden this year.

After being hospitalized, she had to cancel her participation in a state banquet held Tuesday night at Buckingham Palace in honor of Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako. She also canceled a planned weekend trip to Canada.

Elizabeth II’s only daughter, prized for her sense of duty and outspokenness, is more popular than the king, according to a recent YouGov poll.

Anne is a top racing driver and even represented her country at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. She has two children, Peter and Zara, from her first marriage to racing driver Mark Phillips, and five grandchildren. After divorcing in 1992, nine months later she married Commander Timothy Lawrence, a former equerry to Queen Elizabeth.
