In the corner of the room, Golali Karimi is reading her notes, focused. At 23, the Afghan has already conducted hundreds of interviews. She knows the mechanics by heart. But each new interview has the taste of the first time. Because she has barely tasted it. After the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the young journalist’s career collapsed. On Begum TV, Golali is reunited with her passion… and “hope,” she admits, her intense eyes outlined in black pencil.
The small TV channel, located in a space in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, provided by the Paris city hall, dreams of more. Since March 8 (International Women’s Day), it has been broadcasting its educational and entertainment programs to women throughout Afghanistan. The Taliban have deprived them of secondary, high school and university. “It is not enough to be indignant about the situation. We must act, take risks,” says Hamida Aman.
