Salvadorans march against Bukele government policies

Thousands of Salvadorans marched this Sunday in San Salvador against policies of the president’s government Here’s to watching, including giving legal tender to bitcoin in the country.

“People are getting tired of this government authoritarian, undemocratic, he is leading us down a cliff with his bad ideas that already affect the economy with that bitcóin”, Ricardo Navarro, director of the environmental NGO Centro Salvadoreño de Tecnología Apropiada (CESTA), told AFP.

On September 7, El Salvador became the first country to use the bitcóin as legal tender, which according to the government it will help to recover the stagnant economy, dollarized two decades ago.

The government bet that the use of bitcóin help capture the more than 400 million dollars in commissions generated by the remittances they send salvadorans from abroad. These shipments represent 22% of the country’s GDP.

Medardo Gonzalez, former secretary general of the opposition Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), criticized a recent disposition of the Congress, dominated by allies of the president, which retired judges over 60 or with 30 years of service.

“It was attempted against judicial independence, that only makes it a government dictatorial and we don’t want that in El Salvador, ”González told AFP.

Meanwhile, the coordinator of the so-called Salvadoran Trade Union Front (FESS), Wilfredo Berríos, said that they took to the streets “to demand the government and to the deputies that the water is not privatized ”.

Currently a congressional commission is discussing a water law that seeks to protect the resource, guarantee its non-privatization and that access to the vital liquid is for the entire population.

Watch he downplayed the march and denounced that some citizens who did not participate in the activity had been attacked by the protesters.

“In just 12 seconds they censor the freedom of expression of an older adult, they push a person with assisted mobility (cane) and they try to censor a media outlet.
