Seoul says Pyongyang has fired a ballistic missile in its latest test

The South Korean military has reported that North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan (called the East Sea in the two Koreas) in the test that it has carried out today and that is its fifth weapons test in less than two months.

Sinpo (northeast coast) is where North Korea has its submersible development center, which may imply that the North Korean regime has tested a new Pukguksong-class submarine ballistic missile (SLBM).

For his part, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a press appearance in the city of Fukushima that Tokyo has apparently detected the launch of two ballistic missiles and not one.

It is not the first time that the launch of a new type of North Korean weapon complicates the detection efforts of Seoul and Tokyo.

A few minutes after the test was known, the South Korean presidential office reported that a meeting of the National Security Council has been called to analyze the situation.

The North Korean trial took place on the same day that the international fair for the aerospace and defense industry ADEX was inaugurated in the South Korean capital and with the director of US national intelligence, Avril Haines, visiting Seoul.

Haines is scheduled to meet here today with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts, Park Jie-won and Hiroaki Takizawa, precisely to discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula.
