More than 12,000 children under the age of six were orphaned by the coronavirus in Brazil

At least 12,211 children up to six years of age were orphaned by one of their parents by the coronavirus covid-19 on Brazil since the first fatality from the pandemic was registered in the country, in March 2020, official sources reported this Tuesday.

Of this total, the highest percentage was that of children who had not reached one year of age, according to data from the National Association of Registrars of Physical Persons (Arpen-Brazil).

According to the entity, of the children up to six years of age born who were orphaned by the pandemic in the South American giant, 25.6% were less than one year old, followed by those who were between one and two years old (18 , 2% for each age), three years (14.5%), four years (11.4%), five years (7.8%) and six years (2.5%).

Five of the 27 states of Brazil -Sao Paulo, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, Ceará and Paraná- concentrated the highest number of deaths of parents with children in that age group, and Rio was the region that concentrated the highest number of cases ( 774).

The uprising also noted that 223 parents died before their children were born, while 64 children up to the age of six lost both their father and mother to the virus.

Gustavo Renato Fiscarelli, president of Arpen-Brasil, affirmed that the data obtained so far are “shocking”, according to statements given to the Brazil Agency, a government entity dedicated to news distribution.
