The US considers the security situation in Haiti “unsustainable”

The Secretary of State of USA, Antony Blinken, stated on Tuesday that the kidnapping of 16 American missionaries and a Canadian in Haiti it reflects that the security situation in that country is “unsustainable” and is “a much broader problem.”

In a joint press appearance with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Mauricio Montalvo, at the presidential headquarters of Carondelet (Quito), Blinken assured that his government is focused on solving the matter and has sent a team to Haiti.

He clarified that “more operational security is required, given the situation and the kidnapping of 16 Americans and a Canadian,” and that a team specialized in kidnappings from the FBI maintains contact with the Church to which the captured missionaries belong and with the National Police of Haiti.

“We will do everything possible to resolve this situation,” he said, lamenting that the Caribbean country is imbued in a context in which gangs “dominate part of Port-au-Prince,” the capital, and “the Police cannot even act.”

The head of US diplomacy said that in an environment where the State is dominated by the actions of these criminal groups, the future of the Haitian people is jeopardized and there is a narrow margin for action.

However, he advocated a coordinated cooperation of various stakeholders, both political and civil society, and the support of the United States to promote the institutional construction of the State.

“Security is of vital importance and we have worked closely with the Haitian Police to help them in their capacities and establish programs that can effectively deal with gangs. But it is a long-term problem, “he acknowledged.

For his part, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister declared his country’s solidarity with Haiti and recalled the help shown when it was shaken by the 2010 earthquake in the form of “concrete donations” and “in multilateral spaces.”

Ecuador, he said, advocates a “return to the rule of law and democratic institutions” in that country, the poorest on the continent and shaken by violence, crime and natural disasters.

On Monday the White House reported that the FBI is investigating the kidnapping of the American missionaries last weekend.

US Government spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained that the country’s president, Joe Biden, has been informed and receives updates on the efforts of the FBI and the State Department to achieve the release of the citizens of his country.

Psaki did not want to offer more details about these efforts and limited himself to pointing out that the US embassy in Port-au-Prince is coordinating with local authorities to put an end to this kidnapping.

The group was kidnapped on the 16th when traveling by bus after visiting an orphanage, and is made up of five children and twelve adults from the missionary organization Christian Aid Ministries, based in the state of Ohio, in the midwestern United States. United.
