New Zealand will rule out lockdowns with 90% of the population vaccinated against the coronavirus

New Zealand A threshold of 90% of the vaccinated population was set this Friday to rule out the confinements with which the covid-19 pandemic is fighting, still expanding in the country due to an outbreak of the delta variant.

Currently, 86% of New Zealanders in the group eligible to be vaccinated have at least one dose, and 68% follow the full schedule.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also indicated that people already fully vaccinated will not be subject to home confinement or business closures.

“We cannot ask vaccinated people to stay home forever,” he told reporters.

This new measure will bring relief to the nearly two million residents of the city of Auckland, who have been in strict confinement for nine weeks.

The New Zealand government opted for a policy of total elimination of covid-19, with border closures and severe confinements from the detection of the first infections that allowed only 28 deaths to be registered and its five million inhabitants lead an almost normal life.

The prime minister pointed out that this strategy is no longer viable due to the entry of the contagious delta variant in August and is now betting on minimizing its expansion by promoting vaccinations.
