The city in the world that has spent the longest time in strict confinement comes out of quarantine

Melbourne, the city that has spent the most days under strict confinement as a result of the different outbreaks of coronavirus covid-19 on Australia, left his sixth quarantine this midnight when he reached the vaccination goal of 70 percent.

In the face of the lack of refinement that has become effective at 11:59 p.m. local time (13:00 GMT), businesses that have remained closed, such as bars, restaurants, hairdressers or beauty salons, finalized preparations to reopen their doors.

Australian authorities today ended a last 77-day confinement in Melbourne, where its almost five million inhabitants have spent a total of 263 days locked up since the start of the pandemic in different periods.

That record surpasses that of Buenos Aires, which was confined 244 days in two different phases (between March-November and nine days in May), according to ABC’s calculations.

Despite the fact that Victoria, the second most populous in Australia, reported 2,232 local covid-19 infections and 12 deaths on Thursday, its reopening responds to a national plan based on 70 and 80 percent of the vaccination of the population over the age of 16 years.

Victoria today achieved the goal of 70 percent vaccination of her target population, and inoculated the first dose at 90 percent.

Australia, which plans to start the reopening of international borders in November after closing them in March 2020, accumulates more than 150,000 cases since the start of the pandemic, including some 1,600 deaths, most of the fatalities concentrated in the state of Victoria).

This country, which recently abandoned its ironclad strategy of confining populations by detecting a few cases of covid-19, is making progress in its vaccination campaign that began months behind other developed countries due to transportation difficulties and supply, among others.

The oceanic nation has already vaccinated, although at different rates in the different regions, with the complete schedule to 71% of the target population and 86% with at least one dose, which means that with this vaccination rate the confinements are most unlikely.
