Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan who has become China’s main rival

Tsai Ing-wen made history when she became the first female president of the Taiwan. At the time, she was a 59-year-old university professor with little experience in politics who had managed to defeat the historic Kuomintang party.

But his arrival to power and his subsequent re-election, at the beginning of 2020 and with more than 57% of the votes, has only caused more mortification to China and its president, Xi Jinping, who has already publicly said that he will never cease in his efforts that the rebel island is once again under Beijing’s command.

Tsai, now 65, is considered a separatist by the Chinese regime and, in recent weeks, has shown that it does not intend to bend and that Taiwan will continue to be governed autonomously.

SIGHT: Why has the island of Taiwan once again raised tensions between China and the West?

The sensitive issue of Taiwan has returned to the center of attention of international geopolitics due to the increasing military pressure from Beijing, especially by the constant missions of the Chinese air force over the so-called Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) of Taiwan, which has elicited reactions from the United States and the Biden administration.

Since September last year,. As a result of these tensions, the island has strengthened its unofficial ties with Japan, Australia and the United States.

“We will do everything possible to prevent the ‘status quo’ from being unilaterally altered”, said Tsai last October 10 during the celebrations of the National Day of Taiwan.

“We will continue to strengthen our national defense and show our determination to defend ourselves to ensure that no one can force Taiwan to follow the path that China has charted for us.”. And I add: “The path that China has laid out offers us neither a free and democratic way of life for Taiwan nor sovereignty for our 23 million people”Added the president, making clear reference to Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous territory where dissent has been repressed and continues to be silenced.

The Chinese regime refuses to deal with Tsai, which has not hesitated to point out that Taiwan is an independent country and that it will not compromise the defense of its sovereignty or freedom.

In the 1990s, she was a negotiator for Taiwan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

During the government of the pro-independence Chen Shui-bian (2000-2008) she was Vice Prime Minister and head of the Mainland China Affairs Council. It was not until 2004 that she officially joined the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and became a face-to-face candidate in 2012. However, she lost those elections.

After his resignation from the presidency of the PDP in that year, he returned to the head of the party in 2014, imposing peace between the different factions and promoting moderation regarding relations with China, which earned him a reputation as a moderate. However, for the Beijing regime she was always considered an independentista.

In 2020, after being elected for the second time, she was considered one of the world leaders who best managed the coronavirus pandemic because she took forecasts from the beginning, managing to effectively control the waves of infections.
