Cyclone Rick will make landfall on Sunday between the states of Michoacán and Guerrero, in the Pacific of Mexico, as a category 2 hurricane causing strong winds and rains, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned this Saturday.

In addition, the agency said that Rick, now in category 1, will continue to intensify off the coast of the state of Guerrero and this Saturday night is expected to rise to 2 and intensify to category 3 in the early hours of Sunday.

“At 4:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. GMT) the eye of Hurricane Rick was located approximately 285 kilometers (km) southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero, and 315 km south of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán”, specified in a press conference, the coordinator of the SMN, Alejandra Méndez.

He added that the phenomenon registers maximum sustained winds of 140 km / h, gusts of 165 km / h, and advances in a trajectory towards the north-northwest at 9 km / h.

He announced that on Sunday it is expected to reach category 3, with winds of 178 to 208 km / h and its center will be located “very close” to the coast of Guerrero and the east coast of Michoacan.

“The system is expected to make landfall on Sunday evening as a category 2 hurricane, between the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, and Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, since it has experienced an acceleration in its displacement”, he specified.

The coordinator of the SMN explained that after making landfall, Rick “It will continue its path towards Michoacan and Jalisco, quite possibly as a tropical storm or tropical depression ”.

During its journey, it will cause heavy to torrential rains with possible landslides, floods and an increase in rivers and streams, in the states of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

As well as strong winds and waves of 4 to 6 meters on its coasts. Likewise, it will cause heavy rains in the towns of Morelos, Puebla, the State of Mexico, Mexico City and Nayarit.

Meanwhile, the manager of surface water and river engineering of the National Water Commission (Conagua), Heriberto Montes, called for extreme precautions to the general population in the areas of the aforementioned states due to rains, wind and waves (including the maritime navigation) and meet the recommendations issued by the Civil Protection authorities in each region.

OTHER CYCLONES

On October 13, Cyclone Pamela made landfall as a category 1 hurricane in the state of Sinaloa, in the Mexican Pacific, where after its passage it left 2,000 families affected, in addition to 9,000 victims in the neighboring state of Nayarit and material damage, especially in the electrical network.

In the Atlantic, where 20 named cyclones have already been registered, the most devastating has been Grace, which left a total of 11 dead in August, eight in the state of Veracruz and three in Puebla.
