Brazil registers 187 new deaths from coronavirus and the total reaches 605,644

Brazil reported this Sunday 187 new deaths associated with coronavirus, with which the total death toll rose to 605,644 since the beginning of the pandemic, which continues in a downward phase in the country, official sources reported.

According to data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) of the 27 Brazilian states, the country accumulates 21,729,763 coronavirus infections, after adding 6,204 positives in the last 24 hours.

Brazil is the second country with the most deaths from covid-19, behind only the United States (more than 725,000), and the third with the most infections, after the North American country (45 million) and India (34.1 million).

However, the rate of infections and deaths from the disease has been decreasing steadily in the country since June and is currently at its lowest level of the year.

An example of this is the state of Sao Paulo, the most populated and affected by the pandemic in the country, with 151,544 deaths and 4.4 million cases, but this weekend reached its lowest level of hospitalized with covid-19 since April 2020.

Currently, in São Paulo clinics there are 3,563 patients with coronavirus, of which 1,641 receive treatment in intensive care units.

The Government of Sao Paulo recalled that the number of admitted affected by SARS-CoV-2 became “nine times higher” at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, between March and April of this year, when the 31,000 patients hospitalized with the disease.

At the national level, in the last seven days, the daily average of deaths related to covid-19 was 337, while that of cases was 12,200.

The data for this Sunday are lower than the average, although on weekends the numbers are usually lower due to the lower presence of officials in public health bodies.

All in all, the improvement in the pandemic situation responds to the progress of the vaccination campaign, which has been well received by the 213 million Brazilians, despite the denialism of President Jair Bolsonaro, who rejects the severity of the virus, and censures the distancing and doubts the effectiveness of masks.

Since last January 17, the day the campaign began, 71% of the population has received at least the first of the two doses required by most manufacturers, while 51% have the full schedule.
