ICC closes investigation into Colombia for crimes against humanity committed during the armed conflict

The attorney general of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, announced this Thursday in Bogotá that his office will close the case of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the armed conflict in Colombia.

“Colombia lives up to its international obligations (…) and I am pleased to say that I can withdraw from the preliminary examination stage”, assured Khan, who pointed out that this does not mean that the CPI don’t keep looking at ColombiaBut the beginning of a “new relationship”, with a “continuous interaction”.

Khan, who replaced prosecutor Fatou Bensouda in The Hague last June, thus closed the preliminary examination that has been open for the longest time in the CPI, since 2004, and which involves war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Army, the extinct FARC guerrilla and paramilitary groups since 2009 (the former) and 2002 (those against humanity).
