The Vatican will have its Peruvian birth with pieces by artists from the Chopcca people of Huancavelica

The Vatican will inaugurate on December 10 its Christmas tree and its traditional nativity scene, made up on this occasion by more than thirty pieces made by five artists from the Chopcca people of Huancavelica, in the Peruvian Andes, to commemorate the two hundred years of the country’s independence.

“The statues of the Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, the Magi and the shepherds will be made on a natural scale with materials such as ceramics, maguey wood (agave) and fiberglass, and they will be dressed in typical Chopcca costumes” , reported today the Governorate of the Vatican City in a statement.

The nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square will feature multiple traditional elements from Huancavelica: “Jesus will have the appearance of a“ Hilipuska ”child, wrapped in a typical blanket (…) and tied with a“ chumpi ”or braided belt”.

The Three Wise Men, accompanied by llamas with Peruvian flags instead of camels, will carry food from the region in their sacks, such as potatoes, quinoa, kiwicha or cañihua, and there will also be other native animals such as alpacas, vicuñas, sheep, vizcachas, Andean flamingos and the Andean condor, Peruvian national symbol.

In addition, the community Chopcca It will be represented on a small scale, with figures that will transfer to the Plaza de San Pedro “the culture, tradition and ancestral work tools that peasants use to plow the land.”

“The Peruvian manger commemorates the two hundred years of the country’s independence, reproduces a cross section of the life of the Andean peoples and symbolizes the universal call to salvation, since the Son of God was incarnated to save every man and woman from the land, of any language, people, culture and nation “explained the Vatican.

The village Chopcca, with just over 10,000 Quechua-speaking inhabitants, is located about 4,000 meters above sea level, east of the city of Huancavelica, capital of the homonymous department, in the Andes mountain range, in an area crossed by the Qhapaq Ñan or Inca Trail.

For its part, this year the tree will be Italian and will come from Andalo, a small municipality in the Trentino-Alto Adige region (northeast of Italy), at the foot of the Alps.

The spruce, about 28 meters high, will preside over St. Peter’s Square next to the nativity scene, and will be decorated with spherical and wooden ornaments and illuminated with low-consumption LED lights, which will be turned on on December 10, respecting anticovid regulations, as he clarified. The Vatican.

The tree and the manger will remain on display until the end of the Christmas season, which coincides with the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus, on Sunday, January 9, 2022.

Pope Francis usually comes to visit the nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square on December 31.
