Volunteers from the Zaka emergency service, who are in charge of collecting human remains to give them a proper Jewish burial, told their followers: “Don’t worry, we are taking care of it,” referring to Facebook.

Zuckerberg said the new name better “encompasses” what his company does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media, into areas such as virtual reality in the world. “Metaverso”, an online world where people can play, work and communicate in a virtual environment.

The change by name does not apply to their individual platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, only to the parent company.

Still, a Twitter user in Israel said: “Maybe Facebook (I guess now Meta) should have done some study groups on the change of brand ”.

Zuckerberg’s announcement also had an unexpected effect on a Canadian industrial materials company called Meta Materials.

Shares on the stock market rose 6% after the opening of the Nasdaq index on Friday, after a 26% increase in after-hours trading in that stock market.

George Palikaras, the president of the company, also tweeted a joke: “On behalf of @Metamaterialtec, I would like to warmly welcome @Facebook to the #metaverse.”
