Mexico’s National Guard admits it fired on a migrant vehicle

The National Guard of Mexico admitted this Monday that agents of the institution fired at a vehicle in which migrants were traveling, causing several injuries and one death, although he did not clarify whether it was the Cuban shot to death who was part of the caravan advancing through Chiapas (southeast).

In a statement, the National Guard indicated that at 1.40 hours (07.40 GMT) on Sunday agents of the regional coordination “Chiapas 11” reported that three vehicles evaded a security post in the municipality of Huixtla and then found themselves “head on” with a truck whose driver was stopped.

“Contrary to the instructions, the driver tried to attack the elements of the National Guard, accelerating the march of the vehicle, so in response to the driver’s response and seeing his integrity at imminent risk, they activated their weapons to stop the vehicle, achieving the arrest. of his march approximately 50 meters ahead ”, exposed the institution.

They pointed out that several people got out of the vehicle who tried to run in different directions, however they were arrested, while inside there were “four people who were injured, as well as one who did not show vital signs”, although they did not need further data.

The National Guard said it immediately provided first aid to the wounded, who were later taken to the regional hospital for care.

It indicated that the driver of the truck was arrested, who was at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and nine migrants of different nationalities were also detained in coordination with the National Migration Institute (INM).

On Sunday, the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the shooting homicide of a Cuban migrant who was found near a vehicle on a rural road in the municipality of Pijijiapan, in Chiapas.

Activists accompanying the migrant caravan, such as Irineo Mujica from Pueblo Sin Fronteras, denounced this Monday that the National Guard of Mexico attacked several migrants with bullets, causing at least 13 injuries.

The region has experienced an unprecedented migratory wave since the beginning of the year, with a historical flow of 147,000 undocumented persons detected in Mexico from January to August, triple that of 2020.

This group – which has been on the road for more than a week – was launched after the Mexican authorities thwarted the advance of four caravans of migrants in the first days of September that left precisely from Tapachula, a Chiapas municipality bordering Guatemala.

At that time, several UN agencies and NGOs criticized the use of force in operations to disintegrate these caravans.
