USA: kidnapped teenager is rescued thanks to a sign she learned on TikTok

Nevaeh Lance, a 16-year-old who was reported missing last week in North Carolina (USA), managed to save himself from a kidnapping thanks to a distress signal that he learned on the social network TikTok.

After the teenager did not arrive at her home in Asheville, the local police issued a statement offering the description of the missing person and asking for the collaboration of the neighbors.

“Lance is described as a white woman, 1.70 meters tall, with long black hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo on his left back shoulder of ‘CC’ “, the authorities warned.

On Thursday, a motorcyclist alerted county police that he saw a woman in a car making a famous sign that means she is being the victim of gender-based violence. He followed the suspect car until a police car caught up with him.

“The complainant was behind the vehicle and noticed that a passenger in the vehicle was making hand gestures that are known on the TikTok platform to represent domestic violence – I need help – domestic violence”explains the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office statement posted on Facebook.

It is a gesture that can be performed with one hand when the victim of violence cannot speak due to the situation: the hand is raised with the palm out, the thumb is inserted into the hand and then the fingers are closed to catch the thumb.

With the increase in cases of violence and insecurity, these types of signs are taught – as an alert and protection – on social networks such as TikTok.

The intervention

Police stopped the gray Toyota in Kentucky. Inside was the young woman and James Herbert Brick, 61, driving. At first, this subject took Nevaeh to Ohio -where some relatives-, but when he found out that she was a minor and that they were looking for her, he fled again until he was arrested.

“We don’t know how long coming down the interstate from Ohio he was signaling to other motorists in the hope that they would realize he was in danger, but eventually someone recognized him.”Stated Laurel County Deputy Sheriff Gilbert Acciardo.

Brick was taken into custody and now faces charges of “unlawful deprivation of liberty and possession of material showing sexual performance by a minor over the age of 12 but under 18,” according to the Sheriff’s office.
