Haiti’s main radio television stops broadcasting due to lack of fuel

Radio Télévision Caraïbe, a group that controls radio and television leaders in audience in Haiti, ceased its emissions this Monday due to the lack of fuel, in the midst of the shortage crisis that affects the entire country.

The listeners who tried to tune in to the station this Monday found constant noise, a situation similar to that of television, which has had to stop its broadcasts.

The newspaper Le Nouvelliste, the newspaper with the largest circulation in Haiti, also announced that as of this Monday it will only publish its printed edition three times a week for the same reason, according to its director, Frantz Duval, announced through Twitter.

These media, like many companies, generate their own electricity with diesel plants and have had difficulties to supply themselves due to the blockade of the distribution of fuel that the armed gangs have been exercising for weeks.

Schools, hospitals, the media, banks and private companies have announced the reduction of their service hours due to fuel shortages.

Many homes are also without electricity, because they depend on diesel generators, while the price of public and private transport has skyrocketed.

The shortage persists despite the fact that, since last week, the Police escort the tanker trucks to allow them to distribute fuel to hospitals and gas stations.

At the service stations where the supply arrives, crowds and long lines have formed, in which people even spend the night to get a gallon of fuel.

The reason for the shortage is the action of the armed groups, who kidnap, attack and threaten the transporters and obstruct the passage on the avenues that lead to the port of Port-au-Prince, where the main warehouses of the city are located.

The violence of the armed gangs has increased taking advantage of the instability caused by the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, perpetrated on July 7.

The G9 Fanmi e Alye, Haiti’s largest armed gang conglomerate, is trying to force the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry as a condition of allowing fuel distribution.
