Velásquez’s extradition follows that of his wife, the former national treasurer of Venezuela Claudia Patricia Díaz Guillén, extradited by the National Court on October 15, also claimed by USA for having allegedly favored businessman Raúl Gorrín in a foreign currency exchange scheme, which reported profits of hundreds of millions of dollars.

In the car in which it supports the delivery of Velásquez, known this Wednesday, the court considers that the facts for which both are accused in USA, money laundering, have an equivalent in Spain, are punishable by more than one year in prison and are not prescribed, so the requirements for extradition are met.

According to the extradition request of the Southern District Court of Florida, from 2008 to 2017 or around those dates, the businessman Gorrín and the Velásquez-Díaz couple participated in a corrupt ploy in relation to the foreign currency exchange carried out for the Venezuelan government .

Authorities suspect Gorrín paid hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to secure the right to participate in foreign exchange transactions, which earned him hundreds of millions of dollars.

As of 2011, the letter continues, Gorrín offered, promised, authorized and paid bribes to the then treasurer, including through her husband, to influence her in order for the businessman to make foreign currency exchanges for the Venezuelan government .

In addition to the bribes paid through electronic transfers for the benefit of the marriage, explains the American extradition request, Gorrín also bought and paid for property and luxury objects for both of them.

In view of the defense allegations regarding the Spanish nationality of the defendant, granted on April 20 of this year, there is no evidence that it was acquired through fraud, but the National Court clarifies that it is the court’s authority to agree to the delivery.
