The “alarms” for the supposed global blackout: Is it possible ?; this is what is known so far

Rumors of a possible global blackout have spread in recent weeks. Some politicians have even given instructions in various towns in case such an event happens.

However, and before alarming the public, this is what is known so far about the possible event.

It is worth saying that we are talking about a blackout which, although it is unlikely to happen, it may be possible, but in European countries.

  • WHO warns that Europe faces a “harsh winter” due to the rebound in the coronavirus pandemic

An event of that magnitude, then, would occur on the European continent. In fact, there would be very specific areas affected.

What do the experts say?

Antonio Turiel, researcher at the CSIC Institute of Marine Sciences, spoke with the Spanish newspaper ‘NIUS’ about the rumors of the event.

Turiel pointed out that speculation arises because there is a lack of gas in more than one European country.

“When you talk about the great blackout, there is a real risk. It is possible that there will be a very large decompensation on a large scale, at the European level and that everything will collapse. In recent years, whenever there is a decompensation, electrical systems of large power plants are used that can enter and exit easily, that is, thermal power plants. But now, we are short of gas and the price is rising, we are running out of an important tool for compensation ”, he assured.

Turiel said that every time one of these compensations is made, more gas is spent, a fact that is worrying the governments of the Old Continent.

According to this expert, it is a problem that has been alerted for a long time, however, the lack of gas and the recent rise in prices is what caught the attention of governments.

“It seems that there are limits to the ability to integrate renewables on a large scale. If you consider making smaller networks or consumption of localities, perhaps these problems would be avoided. The other option is to invest in stabilization systems, but this is expensive, “he added.

The same researcher pointed out that, if it happens, it is difficult for the ‘blackout’ to reach Spain because it has very few connection points with Europe.

When would it happen?

“Experts expect a blackout in the next five years”, indicated the medium ‘Antena3’.

Countries like Switzerland urged their populations to prepare in the event of a power outage during the winter of this year. And although there is no date that indicates when the event will happen, several governments have begun to manage backup plans taking into account that it is more of a ‘just in case’ at the moment.

“This is a serious and real problem, we are talking about three important countries that are sounding the alarm. The reasons for an unlikely but possible generalized blackout have to do above all with the electrical instability caused by the lack of gas, ”Turiel stressed.

What do governments say?

The first to turn on the alerts was the Austrian government. This still does not rule out the possibility of a blackout in Europe for several days.

“The question is not if there will be a big blackout, but when”Said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

The government has launched the campaign ‘What to do when everything stops?’, Which aims to inform its citizens what to do in the event that the event that they qualify as “a real risk” occurs.

Germany’s Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance has reportedly started a similar campaign in Germany. And Switzerland has also joined the alert.

“We will soon begin to see similar movements in other countries, such as France,” said Antonio Turiel.

The Ministry of Defense of Austria advises to have supplies of fuel, candles, batteries, preserves and drinking water.

They also recommend agreeing with family and friends on a meeting point and creating a network of cooperation between neighbors.
